Lee Carsley’s third outing as interim manager produced an embarrassing defeat – Telegraph Sport assesses how each of his players performed
England suffered humiliation at Wembley as Lee Carsley’s experimental side were beaten 2-1 by Greece, who also had two ‘goals’ ruled out for offside.
Telegraph Sport analyses and rates each player’s performance on a shambolic night for the hosts.
Will be disappointed with an error in the first half on the ball, getting caught and almost conceding. Saved by an offside flag twice when indecisive at a corner and with a poor throw. 4/10
At times was the furthest-forward player in the fluid ‘Carsball’ system. Lovely cross for Gordon set up a chance and his best work was on the flank rather than ‘inverted’. 5/10
Important close-range block in the first half when Greece launched a counter-attack but deceived by Pavlidis for the goal. 5/10
Stunning clearance in the 10th minute when he raced back and booted off his own goal-line to save a certain goal. But part of a back line that looked shaky when under pressure. 5/10
Caught out for winner trying to play in penalty area. Offered plenty of support going forward and is a good option while England are without orthodox left-backs. Very tidy on the ball and looked to bring others into play. 4/10
Hobbled off just after Greece opened the scoring, which will be a worry for Arsenal. Had been booked for a trip and earlier found it hard to find space to cut in and get chances. 5/10
Blazed over the bar in the 22nd minute with a chance he would expect to bury on current form but also set up Watkins chance. Started in a much deeper role than at Chelsea. Faded towards end. 5/10
Did not get much help trying to protect his back four but got himself out to stop attacks and make blocks. Was putting out fires rather than dictating play. Shown a yellow card. 5/10
Plenty of pressing to try to keep Greece in their own territory but would have liked to create more. Had a good chance with a header. 5/10
Looked sharp when on the ball but was not found in dangerous areas often enough. Carsley sees him as a player through the middle but needs better combinations with team-mates. 4/10
Almost rescued England with his equaliser. Earlier had a shot tipped over. False nine is a position he can play and he looked like he would be England’s most likely source of joy. 6/10
